Update: BETA version of Recon Live Chat - 17th August .

Information updated on our brand new feature - Recon Live Chat! It utilises the new message centre to enable members to initiate upto five live 1-1 chats with other members.

Updated: 17th August 2007

The BETA launch of Recon Live Chat has gone fairly well on the whole– in that the chat client allows multiple 1-1 chats, and members are able to connect, etc etc.

The load balancing issues we had on launch day are also now solved – so the performance of the chat sessions is being handled adequately by our servers (once the chat session is esstablished).

However – the key issue that we are now focussing on is the notification delay between requesting a chat and both parties realising there's been a request, and being able to commence their chat session – which in the live environment seems to be a less than satisfactory user experience until both people have connected and are actively chatting.

In addition we need to put more thought into how we ensure that people who show as ‘available’ for Live Chat are actually likely to be around their computer – and are therefore likely to accept your invite.

So, we hope to have an update to the system mid next week that addresses most of these issues, and will of course continue to monitor the feature.

Any constructive feedback you guys have whilst we’re working through this is always welcomed via our support (HELP) section.

Beta version of Recon Live Chat launched - 14th August:

The beta launch of Recon Live Chat enables all members to initiate instant text chat directly with any other member wherever they are in the world, allowing them to chat in real time without having to give out personal instant messenger details or e-mail addresses.

Recon Live Chat uses Adobe Flash (TM) technology and is a fully integrated live messenger application so there is no requirement to download java or other communications software (which is often blocked by corporate or hotel firewalls.)

We expect the chat software to be in beta release for around 4 weeks, so please bear with us whilst we evaluate usage, refine the system, optimise performance and bandwidth, and test standard and premium member features.

We’ve initially limited the number of concurrent chat sessions to 1 per standard user, and 5 per premium member.

So don't forget to look who's talking!

Notes:

You will need to close and re-open you message centre after chat is launched to update the message centre page with the new feature.

If you do not want to use Recon Live Chat simply set your status to away when you first open the message centre and you will not appear as online(for live chat only).

As with the Message Centre deployment it is possible that your PC may have cached the current message centre pages. If you are not seeing an updated message centre(with a chat availability drop down option underneath the last 50 views tab)once the update is live (we will publicise when this has happened via this news article)it is advisable that you clear your local cache For details on how to do this see Recon HELP.
