Status indicators added to Recon Live chat BETA

from Recon News

30 June 2009

We realised that we probably need to be clearer on Live chat statuses to make chat more user friendly, so we're increasing it to four: available, away, busy, unavailable.

We launched chat in August and have been seeing a steady growth in the number of people using it over the course of the last month or so.

However, as users of chat ourselves we've noticed that sending chat requests was a bit hit and miss (sometimes people are at their computer, and sometimes they're away). We realised that we probably need to be clearer on chat statuses, so we're increasing it to four:

Available - I'm available for chat, and I'm at my computer.

Away - I'm available for chat, but may not be at my computer. (This will also be the status defaulted to if you do not use the Recon message centre for around 10 minutes).

Busy - I'm busy right now and may not respond to any invites.

Unavailable - I'm not available for chat.

Additionally, we've been tweaking things behind the scenes to make the request/accept process faster and slicker. We're still optimising this, but should have the majority of this done in the next few weeks (including adding 2 new web servers this week in addition to 2 new database servers last week to handle the load).

For those that don't want to use chat we're also putting in an option via 'edit my account' to opt out of chat (as a personal default, without the need to set it each visit). This should be available in the next couple of weeks.

We hope these additions make Recon Live chat more user-friendly, but please let us know your thoughts by writing to magazine@recon.com
